WE SAT AT THE SAME TABLE I USED as a home base my previous visit. I ordered a huge mocha latte with piles of whipped cream. Eliot went with the more staid plain coffee, which was much cheaper but ridiculously boring. I preferred coffee with pizazz. I also preferred coffee that didnât taste like coffee because otherwise itâs gross.
âOver there.â I inclined my chin toward a jewelry store when I caught sight of Lance. âHeâs one of them.â
âWhich one?â
âLance.â
âDid you get last names?â
âThey have names embroidered on their shirts, but I already forgot their last names. Is that a problem?â
âIt shouldnât be. Iâll talk Tom into giving me his employee records before we go.â Eliot was thoughtful as he sipped his coffee and reclined in his chair. âThatâs not the one who showed up outside the pet store.â
âNo. Thatâs his buddy ... although not the buddy heâs with right now. I donât know what this dudeâs name is. I donât know if itâs even important to know what this dudeâs name is.â
âYeah, Iâm right there with you.â Eliotâs eyes were hard to read as he moved them between storefronts. âI guess itâs been a long time since I was in here. I didnât realize the mall was in such trouble.â
âTrouble? Have you even been reading The Monitor? The closure of the mall is a foregone conclusion.â
âIt is?â He looked surprised. âI didnât know that. When?â
âThey havenât set a date, but look around. Online shopping has changed the retail world and itâs never going back. The outdoor mall up the way is still doing okay. That has another gimmick.â
âWhat gimmick?â
âItâs dog-friendly and thereâs a bunch of stuff for kids to do there when itâs nice out. Thereâs a theater and they have flat-screen televisions and comfortable chairs for men to hang out in if theyâre bored. They always have games on.â
âHuh. Why donât we spend more time at the outdoor mall?â
âBecause I donât like people.â
His grin was sly. âGood point. Still, I didnât know this mall was in trouble. I just assumed it was rocking right along like it always did.â
âEven though we havenât been in it for almost a year.â
âI ... huh.â He stroked his chin. âYouâre right. I stop in the occasional store here and there, but itâs usually a Target ... or Meijer ... or Walmart. I donât really visit the mall. If I need clothes or something, I buy them online.â
âChristina said itâs not just the stores that are changing here. It used to be that the security guards skewed older. Weâre talking forties and fifties. That all changed when the stores started closing.â
âProbably because the management firm couldnât afford to pay as much. Without stores coming in, thereâs less rent. Iâll bet theyâve lowered the rent for a lot of these places to keep them here. What are they going to do with the building?â He lifted his eyes to the second floor. It was as depressing and stark as the first. âI mean ... itâs not as if thereâs a lot that can be done with this space.
